State Assessment Window (April 13-June 5)
The previous statewide assessment, MEAP, has been replaced by M-STEP. The following testing dates are when 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be testing. Please be aware of these dates as you make Spring appointments for your student(s).

5th Annual FUN RUN
Congratulations to Mrs. Clark and Mrs Broz's for running the most laps. Mr. Mitevski is running on May 18th to match the laps. Please join us Monday, May 18 for the PTA meeting and to cheer Mr. Mitevski on. Thanks for all who volunteered, it was a huge success! Reminder fun run money is due May 22.

Stroll and Roll for Rett
Former West Maple secretary, Sandy Kopelman, started the annual Stroll and Roll for Rett after her daughter Rachel passed away in 2000. On Sunday, May 17, join us at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield to raise money to benefit the lives of those living with Rett syndrome. Registration begins at 10:00 AM and the stroll will begin at 11:00 AM. For more information visit www.strollathon.org/SupportRachel.

Peacemaker Bracelet Sale
Peacemakers is a school organization that allows the students the opportunity to explore the West Maple touchstone while incorporating service learning. Our second and third grade peacemakers brainstormed and came up with numerous ideas to help other kids in their community. For their year-long service learning project they decided to partner with Lutheran Adoption Services to provide birthday gifts for children who are awaiting a home, in foster care. The Peacemakers are making Rainbow Loom bracelets to sell on May 21st to raise money. The students are truly engaged in this process, they were able to meet a representative from Lutheran Adoption Services. They are very excited to be working on this project and they can’t wait to see their school-wide initiative take action.
Berkshire Bound 2015 Registration Form Berkshire Bound is a five day (1/2 day) orientation program, Monday - Friday, August 24-28, 2015 for incoming 6th graders for the 2015-2016 school year. This program is for students who want to become familiar with Berkshire. Participants will meet some of their teachers, spend time with old and new classmates, and become familiar with their new school building. It combines enjoyable aspects of Science, Math, Computers and Language Arts with an informal and fun atmosphere.

Spring Miler’s Club
Tuesday, May 26 (lunch recess)
Parent volunteers are needed on Mondays to help tally student laps, pass out foot tokens, and of course, cheer for our awesome runners as they reach their mileage goals. If you are able, please consider volunteering for this awesome and fun program. The link for the Miler’s sign-up is below, as well as posted on the West Maple webpage under PTA Links.

2015 Beginning Orchestra Spring Concert Performances
All 5th grade beginning orchestra students will combine this spring to perform Groves High School Auditorium. The two combined schools concert date for this year is:
Berkshire feeder schools
Rehearsal (mandatory)- Monday, June 1, 4:30-5:30pm
Concert -Tuesday, June 2nd, 7:00pm.
(Both events are located at Groves Auditorium)
Students will provide their own transportation to and from the after school rehearsal. All of the 5th orchestra students have been working very hard since last September and are very excited for the upcoming performance. Each elementary orchestra will also perform a day concert at their own school for students and staff. These dates are still to be determined.
West Maple Kindergarten 2015-16
We have started enrolling kindergarten students for next school year. If you have any new neighbors with an incoming kindergartener, please have them come visit West Maple. We have play dates scheduled for the summer months and lots of fabulous information to share with them.

All chair positions can be shared, and there is always help from the PTA, so please consider volunteering to help your child’s school and keep the wonderful programs we offer.
MEMBERSHIP - We want to thank all those parents that have all ready registered to be a PTA member. Your support provides many enriching programs in and out of the classroom. If you have not registered please join us in supporting our children's education. In the past the PTA has raised funds for our wonderful technology, including IPADS. We are now in the process of replacing the sign in the front of the school with a beautiful electronic sign. All of this cannot be done without the support of the PTA. Your child will be coming home and telling you about a contest for the 1st classes to have their dues fully paid. It’s exciting for your child so please get your dues in if not already done.
VOLUNTEER - Please sign-up to volunteer your time for many of our worthwhile events. Categories to volunteer include academic, fundraising events, service, social or wellness. BPS-Saturday School at Berkshire
Saturday School takes place every Saturday (excluding holidays and breaks) throughout the school year. It is hosted in the media center at Berkshire Middle School. Saturday School will be in session for the 2014-2015 school year:

Summer Programs at the Early Childhood Center (Midvale)
There are many opportunities available for summer camps at the early childhood center for your child ages preschool through first grade! All programs are open to the public! Please call Teri at 248-203-5803 or register online at www.ecc.birmingham.k12.mi.us . Activities include indoor and outdoor play, cooking, science experiments, art, and much more! Bring a bathing suit and towel to enjoy water play outside! Before and After care are available.
Preschool: Full day programs are open to the public! We offer 5, two-week sessions throughout the summer. Our programs are run by Midvale teaching staff.
K-1 Camp: Full day camp for children who have completed kindergarten or first grade. This camp is co-taught by two certified teachers who provide enrichment activities to build upon and practice skills learned during the school year! Each day, campers walk to Seaholm to swim in the Seaholm pool. There are 5, two-week sessions to choose from.
Safety Town: Open to all children entering kindergarten this fall! This two week, half day camp provides learning in concepts including electrical, fire, stranger, bus, pedestrian safety, and more. Guest speakers include Louie the Lightning Bug, Birmingham Police and Fire personnel, and Venus the Safety Dog. Each day campers walk to the miniature town to practice concepts in traffic and pedestrian safety driving our popular go-karts. Children learn the safe way to cross a street, and practice their address and phone number. Teen volunteers work with small groups and classes are taught by Midvale teachers. Registration ends soon so hurry and sign up!!
Math & Reading Review (Grades K-5)
July 20–August 7 (Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM)
Each class is taught by a BPS district teacher and covers the math and reading curriculum set for that specific grade level by Birmingham Public Schools.
This program is designed for students who could benefit from review and reinforcement of math and reading skills.
Please register by June 1, 2015 so that our summer staff can communicate with your child’s current teacher on how to best meet your student’s individual needs.
Exiting 5th graders who like a challenge may enroll in advanced math and/or reading at Seaholm High School (June 16-July 2).
Register by May 29, 2015 to receive discounted tuition on these classes!

Summer C.O.O.L. (Compass Odyssey Online Learning)
Compass Learning is an online learning tool that combines math instruction, practice and assessment. Students log-on to their own personal Compass account through the Birmingham Schools webpage, select “Staff Only” on the left hand side of the main web-page, and then pick “Compass Learning” to get in.
Students can log-on online any time to work on their own personal learning path.
Beginning June 26th - August 20th from 4 -5 pm at Groves HS (beginning on June 26th), a Pierce teacher will be available to monitor and assist students in their learning.
No lab class on July 3rd.

Summer Food Program We would like to provide families with information regarding the Summer Food Service Program as we enter the summer months. The SFSP is a Child Nutrition Program that feeds children during school summer vacations. Families that qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program used during the school year are eligible.
